Detailed costs
After Brexit, cars imported from Japan are subject to UK import duty and VAT on the import value. You pay duty and VAT at clearance, then proceed to IVA if the vehicle lacks an EU/UK type approval that covers your exact variant.
Japanese domestic models usually require Individual Vehicle Approval: emissions, noise, lighting, and safety checks at an approved facility. Once passed, you register with DVLA (first registration fee, number plates).
IVA (Individual Vehicle Approval)
IVA is the UK’s path for vehicles without full type approval. The test confirms your car meets GB standards. Bring complete Japanese documentation, VIN evidence, and a clean, road-legal car.
MOT-style preparation (lights, tyres, wipers) before the IVA appointment avoids retests.
DVLA registration
After IVA, submit your paperwork to DVLA for a UK registration certificate. You receive a registration number suitable for plates. Insurance must be in place before road use.
RHD advantage
Japan drives on the left like the UK, so most JDM cars are already RHD—no steering conversion. That saves cost and preserves originality compared with importing LHD EU-market cars.
